Wright Leads No. 8 Falcons to Victory over Niagara

(London, Ontario) – At the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Friday night, the No. 8 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball squad beat the Niagara Knights (1-7) by a score of 94-48 behind 26 points from local guard Mikhaila Wright. At the end of first semester play, the Falcons sit atop the West Division standings with a regular season record of 9-1.

 

The Knights came out strong in the first quarter, taking an early lead on the home team. The Falcons chipped away and were able to go up 17-16 after the opening frame. Wright scored 10 points in the quarter. Fanshawe stepped up their defense in the second frame, only allowing Niagara nine points. The red and white's pressure defense led to back-to-back steals from Ashleigh LaBlance (Wallaceburg, ON) and Sydney Kendellen (London, ON). Fifth-year player Chuot Angou (London, ON) and Wright scored seven points each to give the Birds a 46-24 half time lead.

 

The Falcons went on a 12-0 run to start the second half. Angou found Mackenzie Van Dyk (Parkhill, ON) for the layup followed by a strong take to the rim of her own. Fanshawe stretched their lead to 70-33 going into the final quarter. In the fourth, a steal from Bethany Miller (London, ON) resulted in a layup by Jessica Cameron (Calgary, AB). Despite Niagara's best efforts, the Falcons would go on to win 94-48. Wright stuffed the stats sheet with 26 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists and a block in 25 minutes of play. Angou added 19 points and 9 assists.

 

As a team, Fanshawe currently leads the OCAA in numerous statistical categories including field goal percentage (40.8%), assists per game (21.8), three point percentage (34.5) and least amount of points allowed per game (51.2).
