Falcons Sweep George Brown Series with Extra Inning Victory

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Men's Baseball team (8-6) swept the George Brown Huskies (2-10) on Saturday afternoon at Labatt Park. Fanshawe defeated the Huskies by scores of 10-3 and 7-6 in extra innings.

 

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Fanshawe went up 2-0 in the first inning. The Falcons heated up in the second inning, scoring six runs with RBI's from Ty Armstrong (Thorndale, ON), Brendan Robertson (Oshawa, ON), Matt Bowden (London, ON), Josh Hare (St. Thomas, ON), and Brandon Jones (Mississauga, ON) to make the score 8-0. George Brown got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, when they scored three runs. The Falcons shut down the Huskies attempt at a comeback, scoring another two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and keeping the visitors scoreless in the top of the seventh to finish the game 10-3. Armstrong led the Falcons offensively, going 4 for 4 at the plate, with 2 RBI's and 2 runs. Jones and Darren Dwyer (West Montrose, ON) went 2 for 3 at the plate, adding 2 RBI's and 1 run each. London native Kale Bilger improved his record to 2-2 with the win. Quentin Fleming (0-4) was the losing pitcher for George Brown.

 

George Brown stepped it up in game two, scoring an early run in the top of the first inning. Robertson tied the game with a double to left field that scored Kevin Bowden (London, ON) in the bottom of the second. Robertson would then score on a Huskies error to give the home team a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, George Brown scored a run to tie the game but the Falcons would regain the lead. With Matt Bowden at second after a double, Quinton Twohey (London, ON) belted a pitch all the way to the fence, scoring the runner. Fanshawe extended their lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning with another Armstrong RBI but the Huskies would score three with no hits to retake the lead 5-4. In the bottom of the sixth inning, singles from Tyler Wood (Niagara Falls, ON), Tristan Buntrock (Sarnia, ON) and Armstrong loaded the bases. A fielder's choice then tied the game 5-5. Both teams would be held scoreless in the seventh to force extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, George Brown scored a run, but Armstrong tied the game on a Huskies error. Matt Bowden then hit a walk off single to centrefield to score Buntrock and win the game 7-6. Fanshawe pitcher Stephan Barclay (2-0) notched the win, while Austin Fraser (0-1) took the loss for the Huskies. Fanshawe swept the season series with George Brown, 4-0.

 

The Falcons' will host the Seneca Sting (1-9) tomorrow at 1pm and 3:30pm. General admission tickets are $5 per person, with free admission for kids under six and Fanshawe students with their FANcard. Tickets are cash only and will be available at the gates of Labatt Park on Falcons game days, one hour prior to game time.
