OSHAWA, Ont. - On Friday night, at Vaso's Field, it was a battle of the East as the second place Durham Lords were upset by the fifth place Seneca Sting 2-1.
With just two games under their belt, Seneca came out strong scoring in just the 22nd minute. The go-ahead goal came from a header by rookie Georgia Thompson.
The Lords had many chances to tie the game up but the Sting's keeper, Kaitlyn James, was a brick wall only letting one goal past her in the final minutes of play.
Seneca increased their lead to 2-0, with a goal coming in the 82
nd minute of play by Francesca Pedulla. The goal was the first of the season for the fifth-year veteran.
In the final minute of regulation time, defenseman
Jennifer Smith (Toronto, Ont.) drilled one home for the Lords, closing the gap by one. This was the rookie's second goal of the season.
Unfortunately, a late second effort by Durham caused them to run out of time and they were handed just their second loss of the season.
The Lords will have a week to rest up and prepare for their next match against the undefeated Algonquin Thunder on Friday, September 29
th with kick off set for 6 p.m. at Vaso's Field.
