Box Score OTTAWA, Ont. - Competing against the No. 9 nationally ranked Algonquin Thunder for the second time in seven days, the No. 7 Durham Lords men's soccer team picked up another draw with their provincial rivals on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a good effort from both teams today battling some intense heat," said Lords head coach
Dave Ashfield. "Competing late last night and traveling for another game today I was really proud of how our guys responded and showed that they will compete no matter the situation we find ourselves in."
Following a 0-0 stalemate last weekend, the two squads battled to a 2-2 result, extending the rivalry developed from the 2017 OCAAÂ gold-medal matchup further into the 2018 season.
First-year striker
Nigel Buckley (Pickering, Ont.) was the lone goal scorer in the first half as the Lords carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
After halftime, fellow first-year striker
Matthew Morris (Ajax, Ont.) added to the Durham lead.
However, the Lords were unlucky in drawing two penalties within their own 18-yard box resulting in two penalty kick opportunities for the Thunder. Algonquin took advantage on both to restore the stalemate and once again split points with the Lords.
Lords goalkeeper
Kevon Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) recorded 13 saves, while Thunder keeper Colin Gibson made six.
The No. 7 Lords are undefeated in their first three contests of the 2018 OCAA season. They now return home to Vaso's Field where they will challenge the Fleming Knights and Seneca Sting in two mid-week contests. Durham will challenge Fleming on Tuesday with kick off set for 8:15 p.m., before taking on the Sting on Thursday with the same start time.Â
