The Mountaineers got their first win of the OCAA season following a 2-0 win over the Redeemer Royals.

''This is our first victory, but there will be a second and third one,'' said head coach Paul Giannini. ''We're going to keep rolling and continue this momentum into the next game.''

Mohawk played some of its best soccer of the season throughout the game. They capitalized late in the first half with Sam Mathieu scoring in the 44th minute to give the Mountaineers the lead.

Mathieu's was the star of the game as she would score her second of the game 10 minutes into the second half to give the Mountaineers the 2-0 advantage.

The second-year athlete started the season playing midfield, but recently was moved to the striker position and has since scored four goals.

''I like being a striker,'' Mathieu said. ''This change has been working out because I have found a lot of success as a striker and it is showing on the scoreboard."

Giannini was impressed by his team's defensive abilities as the Mountaineers limited the Royals scoring chances.

"Last practice we spent a lot of time on defence," Giannini said. "That practice translated to this game and hopefully we can continue to play as we did tonight moving forward."

Mohawk will close out its regular season play on Oct. 8 as they host the Sheridan Bruins at Tim Horton's Field starting at 6 p.m. No spectators will be allowed at this game due to COVID-19 safety protocols.
