Falcons Softball Team Drops Hard Fought OCAA Playoff Game

(London, Ontario)
– The Fanshawe Softball team (9-8, 4th) saw their season come to a heartbreaking end on Thursday evening in Windsor. They were defeated by the Conestoga Condors (7-12, 5th) in a hard fought OCAA first round playoff game by a score of 2-1.

OCAA Pitcher of the Year and All-Star, Morgan Lowry (Middlesex-Centre) had a great start to the game, striking out five of the first six Conestoga batters. Unfortunately, the Falcons struggled at the plate and the game remained scoreless through three innings. The Condors got on the board first in the top of the fourth, scoring two. Fanshawe regrouped with back-to-back singles from Sara Reading (Listowel, ON) and Kamryn Lamond (Tavistock, ON) in the bottom of the fifth frame. Jana Beiman (Moorefield, ON) had an RBI single to score Reading and cut the Conestoga lead to 2-1. In the sixth inning, a deep drive to the left field gap from OCAA Batting Champion and All-Star, Kennedi Roth (Stratford, ON) was caught by the Condors centrefielder on a spectacular diving play to maintain Conestoga's lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Reading and Beiman singled, then Paige Askew (London, ON) was walked to load the bases for the Falcons with two outs. Unfortunately, Fanshawe could not push the tying run across the plate and fell to the Condors 2-1. Lowry recorded an incredible 17 strikeouts, crushing the previous Fanshawe Softball playoff strikeout record of five. Reading was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game.
