By: Ryan Watson

SCARBOROUGH - The Centennial Colts got off to an early lead 8-2 and forced the Algonquin Wolves coach to call timeout half way through the first quarter. Algonquin came out of the time out and closed the gap going on a 5 point run, but after the rally Colts still found themselves finishing the first frame up by a basket 18-16.

Leah Hirst had a quarter-high 5 points, while Mikhaila Hawkins, Christiana Cooks and Jenna Crawford all tied at 4 points a piece after the first quarter

In the second, the Colts were outscored 14-8 as their first quarter success was tainted by the effectiveness of the Algonquin offence. Marian Martin drilled the first three of the game for the Colts bringing her team within one (22-23) late in the frame but after a back and forth latter-half of the quarter the Colts found themselves down by three — 30-27.

At the halfway point of the game; Martin and Crawford led the Colts with five points apiece, while Hirst and Jade Lyons spearheaded the Algonquin offence with eight points each.

Martin’s range was on display in the third quarter hitting two triples. She was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc on the day, and accounted for six of her team’s 17 points in the third. The Wolves slightly out-pacing the Colts, extending their lead to eight with the third quarter finishing 52-44 in favor of the visiting team.

Jade Lyons continued to anchor the Algonquin offence with 15 points heading into the final quarter.

The scoring pace from Algonquin did not slow down in the fourth quarter as the Wolves outscored the Colts 22-10, Centennial just couldn’t extinguish the fire power of Algonquin College.

At the final whistle, Martin who previously averaged 1.5 PPG, ended as the Colts’ leading scorer on the day with 13 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. On the flip side of the coin, for Algonquin, Lyons finished the day with a game high 15 points, 2 assists and 4 rebounds.

The Colts fall to 1-2 on the season but will look to rebound in their next game against St. Lawrence College next Friday.
