HUSKIES VOLLEYBALL SPLIT ON THE ROAD IN SEASON OPENER

Huskies players lined up for serve, one player pointing

On Friday October 21, 2022, the George Brown women and men's volleyball teams began their 2022-23 season on the road against Georgian College Grizzlies in Barrie, ON. The women's team was successful in their opening match taking it 3-0, while the men's team fell 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED | WOMEN: After trailing early in the first set, the women's team would rally back, scoring six unanswered points that shifted the momentum the Huskies way. George Brown would go on to take the match in three straight sets (25-23, 25-21 and 25-18) led by Jaque Ronquillo (1st Year) and Taylor Grant (1st Year) who had a combined 31 points for the Huskies. Genesis Doctolero (1st Year) also came up big for George Brown with solid serving and key digs at pivotal times that aided the Huskies to victory.

Head coach Daphne Choi said, "I was extremely proud of our team tonight - we spent the weeks leading up to tonight intentionally practicing how to overcome adversity and it paid off tonight." She continued, "we took a few points to get accustomed to the gym and once we found some momentum we never looked back. I was particularly happy with the calm confidence we were able to maintain even if we had a few bad rolls. It speaks to the incredible integrity of this group of athletes."

HOW IT HAPPENED | MEN: After taking the first set 26-24, the men's volleyball team would go on to lose the following three 20-25, 21-25 and 16-25 falling to the Georgian Grizzlies in four sets on the road.

Leading the way for the Huskies in the defeat were David Kiswa (1st Year) who had a monster evening with 24 points and 13 digs to open the season, along with David Fountain (2nd Year) who had 13 digs and Arsam Talebi (2nd Year) with seven. The Huskies also had a team combined six service aces while the Grizzlies had four, and both teams registered the same number of digs (39) on the defensive end. So while the Huskies (37) registered nearly the same amount of kills at the Grizzlies (41), the home team was much more efficient, registering a team kill percentage of .359 to the Huskies' only .130 alongside 25 errors, which proved to the main difference maker in the game.
