Falcons Defeat George Brown in Doubleheader

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Men's Baseball team (5-3) swept their doubleheader against the George Brown Huskies (1-8) on Saturday afternoon at Norm Aldridge field by scores of 8-7 and 12-6.

A Greg Van Boekel (Woodstock, ON) triple got the Falcons on the board first in game one, scoring teammates Brad Verhoeven (St. Thomas, ON) and Macguire Gordon (Lucan, ON) in the opening inning. Van Boekel then stole home to give Fanshawe an early 3-0 lead. The Huskies responded in the fourth frame with three runs of their own to tie the game. But Fanshawe came up big in the fifth inning, scoring four runs including a 3-run RBI by Blake Petsinis (Ajax, ON). Despite George Brown chipping away in the remaining two innings, it wouldn't be enough. The Birds won the first game of the doubleheader 8-7. Falcons' pitcher Russell Derksen (Toronto, ON) improved his record to 2-1 on the season, while George Brown's Daniel Espiritu (0-1) took the loss.

In game two, the home team held a 5-1 lead after four innings behind 3 RBIs from third year outfielder Faris Adamou (Mississauga, ON). The Huskies did not let up, and came back with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Falcons quickly recovered in the bottom of the fifth, with RBIs from Jamie Chopping-Lawlor (Cambridge, ON), Liam Carson (Ingersoll, ON) and Gordon. Fanshawe added four more runs in the sixth frame to secure their second victory of the day. Adamou and Chopping-Lawlor both had 3 RBIs, 2 hits and 1 run in the game. Adamou also added 2 stolen bases and is currently tied for top in the OCAA in that category with 7. Wyatt Kerr (Lucan, ON) (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Fanshawe and the losing pitcher was Manuel Rodriguez (0-2) of George Brown.

Fanshawe will travel to Lambton (1-7) for their next doubleheader on Friday, October 8.
