Humber wins 10th straight title – Lords take silver in Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. – For another year the Humber Hawks will hold the title of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) champions after defeating the Durham College women's volleyball team 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 18-25) Sunday night in Windsor.

This is the second time in three years that Durham has earned silver at the championship after also falling to Humber 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-17) two years ago in Anacaster.

"I'm extremely proud of our girls and our team for getting back here and pushing Humber with everything we had," said head coach Tony Clarke. "They're a fantastic team and we wish them the best of luck at nationals. We hope they do well for Ontario and hope to be playing them again at next year's provincial championship."

As has been the case all season, Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.) and Shannon Dean (Whitby, Ont.) led the Lords offensively as they each finished with 13 points.

Marshall had 12 kills, but Humber made it difficult on her as those came on 48 attempts. She also had a block.

Dean picked up nine kills, while adding two aces and two blocks.

Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) quarterbacked the offence with 24 assists, while also leading the team with 14 digs. Libero Brier Kaake (Whitby, Ont.) finished with 10 digs.

Devan O'Connor gave the Lords fits all night long as she had 14 kills and 12 digs. OCAA rookie of the year Breanna Golding ended up with 12 kills, three blocks and nine digs. Setter Gabie Miletic, who was named the championship MVP, ended up with 35 assists.

Romain was named the player of the game for the gold medal match, which was followed by Dean and Marshall being named tournament all-stars.

This marked the first year both the volleyball teams from Durham College were in the gold medal game as the men's team also won silver in Hamilton.

The Lords finish the year with 26 overall wins, breaking the previous record of 24 set by the 1999-00 team that won bronze at the OCAA championship.
