Mohawk Mountaineers will begin the OCAA playoffs next Saturday as the number two seed in the west division after securing a 1-0 win over the Fanshawe Falcons.

The victory meant the Mountaineers ended the 2022 season with an undefeated record at 5-0-5. It's the first-time since 1998 Mohawk hasn't lost a game in a single season.

In the match versus the Falcons, NCAA Division I transfer Paige Epp (Grimsby, ON) scored her first-ever OCAA goal to lift the Mountaineers to the win. Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, ON) picked up the assist to add to her team-leading 12th point on the season.

Goalkeeper Samantha DeHaan (Smithville, ON) made five saves in the match, while the Mohawk offense had six shots on goal.

Head coach Paul Giannini credited the Falcons overall performance.

"Fanshawe is a good team. Much better than their record (shows) and very well-organized," said Giannini.

He added that the Mountaineers are playing hard and keeping their composure, particularly in close matchups. Not only has Mohawk been in five draws this season, all five victories were a one-goal difference.

The Mountaineers conclude the 2022 season having won three in a row.

"Playing a 10-game season and going undefeated and more importantly only allowing eight goals against is hard," Giannini said. "We have a great group and I'm happy with what we've done so far."

Mohawk will host an OCAA crossover round matchup on Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. Due to scheduling conflicts, the match will be played at St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School in Stoney Creek, ON.
