Women's rugby makes history in OCAA sevens debut

OSHAWA, Ont. - Hosting the first OCAA east tournament of the season at Thompson Rugby Park, the Durham College women's rugby team made history with their OCAA sevens debut on Saturday.

"I was impressed with our girls because I could really see we were getting better and better as the day went on," said Lords head coach Chris McKee. "A lot of our athletes had never played sevens before, coming from competing in 15's, so I think I was most happy with seeing them find their shape and understanding where they need to be when it comes to sevens."

The full day of competition featured all five teams from the OCAA east division competing in ten matches at the home of Lords rugby, Thompson Rugby Park. Durham opened the day with an early morning contest against the Fleming Knights, falling 21-0 in their official debut match. The Lords then faced stiff competition in the Loyalist Lancers and Algonquin Thunder, both of whom shutout Durham, 21-0 and 43-0, respectively.

In the final contest of the afternoon, Kaya Crockford-Jerome added to the history making day for Durham College, recording the first try at an official OCAA event in Lords women's sevens history. Trailing the St. Lawrence Vikings 20-0, Crockford-Jerome broke free for an end-to-end effort that produced the final try of the day. Taylor Lantaigne nailed the conversion for the Lords to round out the scoring.

The Lords will now have two weeks to prepare for their next outing when they head to Fleming College in Peterborough to compete in the OCAA crossover tournament taking place Oct. 13-14. Durham will kick off against the Sheridan Bruins on the Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
