Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Durham College Sports Information

Durham unable to dig out of early deficit

TORONTO, Ont. - In a race for second place in the OCAA east division with George Brown, the Durham Lords women's basketball team came up short, 74-64, in a road matchup versus the Huskies on Sunday afternoon.

The loss ends a seven-game win streak for the Lords and puts their record to 11-5 on the season, now sitting in third place behind George Brown who improved to 12-3.

"It was a terrible start for us today early in the first quarter, which forced us a little out of our game plan," said Durham head coach Heather Lafontaine. "Despite the result I was pleased to see our team find the desire to push back, seeing a solid effort at both ends from Maddie [Dender] and a great game defensively from Emily [Chamberlain]. As we head into the postseason we need to make sure we start games with the desire I saw us pick up as the game went on in order to avoid putting ourselves in too deep of a hole early in these important games."

Durham was in tough from the tip as they fell behind 13-0 in the early goings of the late season showdown. Continuously battling back, the Lords were able to shoot 40 per cent from the field when they were able to get rolling on the offensive end of the court, but for the first time during their recent win streak were outrebounded, making it difficult for Durham to implement their usual up-and-down style of play. The Huskies controlled the pace in the half court, forcing the Lords into turnovers and maintaining the gap created by their early game success.

The Lords will look to secure their playoff positioning next Sunday, Feb. 17 when they host the OCAA east division winning Algonquin Thunder in their home finale at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre. Tip off for the final regular season contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Coming off the bench, Maddie Dender (Ajax, Ont.) scored a team-high 16 points, adding three assists.
• Three other Lords recorded 10 points in the loss: Emily Chamberlain (Kingston, Ont.), Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.) and Victoria Brody (Scarborough, Ont.).
• Knocking down six three-pointers for the Huskies, Zae Sellers led all players with 25 points on the afternoon.
  • A consistent force on the glass, Marie Stasiuk (Cobourg, Ont.) led Durham with seven rebounds and three steals. Stasiuk has recorded seven or more rebounds in 10 consecutive games.
• Brody hit nearly every column on the stats sheet, adding five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in 23 minutes of action off the bench for the Lords.
• Tianna Sullivan led George Brown with a game-high 14 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass, also recording seven assists, two steals, and 10 points for the double-double.
  Overall Record: 16-8
Conference Record: 11-5
