Women’s Volleyball Begins OCAA Season With Sweep Over Sheridan

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (1-0) returned to the Glenn Johnston Athletics Centre for the first time in two years on Thursday evening, rolling to a three set victory over the Sheridan Bruins (0-1).

The Falcons jumped out to an early 9-3 lead with a well-placed tip from Dez Chanthaboury (Kitchener, ON). Fanshawe then had back-to-back service aces by Kiana Lee (London, ON) to extend their lead. Fanshawe continued to dominate the first set and went on to win 25-9.

The red and white continued where they left off in the second set with a strong hit from Hannah Onyema (St. Thomas, ON). Setter Ashley Rafferty (Peace River, AB) set up Lauren Vahrmeyer (Vineland, ON) to extend Fanshawe's lead to 16-11 midway through the set. Sheridan attempted to come back, but the red and white held their lead and took set two 25-23.

Rafferty gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead in set three with excellent serving. A dig from libero Vanessa Vargas (Mississauga, ON) set up a kill for Lee to keep the Falcons in front. After a big block from Chanthaboury, Vahrmeyer ended the match with a huge hit. Despite Sheridan's best efforts, Fanshawe won set three 25-17 and the match 3-0.

As a team, the Birds had an impressive 14 aces in the match. Vahrmeyer finished with a game-high 10 points and Lee added eight. The Falcons will host the Mohawk Mountaineers on Saturday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. The game can be live streamed here: www.fanshawefalcons.ca/watchlive .
