Women's rugby perfect at final east tournament

OTTAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's rugby team will enter the 2019 OCAA championship as the top seed in the east after finishing a perfect 4-0 at the final east division tournament of the regular season on Saturday in Ottawa.

Finishing first in the east, the Lords have clinched a berth to the OCAA championship for the first time in program history, following their inaugural season just last fall.

DC opened the day with a convincing 43-12 victory over the Fleming Knights. Kaylah Moehling (Port Colborne, Ont.) continued her incredible rookie campaign with the Lords by adding three tries in the opening match of the day. DC also received tries from Victoria Browne (Pickering, Ont.), Rachel Philip (Courtice, Ont.), and Danielle Belanger (Courtice, Ont.), with the latter also kicking four converts.

Durham continued their hot start to the day with a 34-19 win versus the St. Lawrence Vikings. Moehling added another four tries to her total for the day, while Glory Ezeude (Vaughan, Ont.) and Carly Warren (Courtice, Ont.) added their names to the scoresheet. Belanger kicked another two successful converts for the Lords.

Matching up with the second place Algonquin Thunder in their toughest match of the day, Durham walked away with a 36-12 victory to secure first place in the east. Warren and Belanger reached the try zone twice, with Moehling and Ezeude each recording single markers. Belanger also added three more converts.

In the final outing of the day, the Lords avenged a loss from earlier in the season versus Loyalist, shutting out the Lancers 17-0. The combination of Moehling, Warren, and Ezeude each scored tries, while Belanger made one convert.

Next on the schedule is the OCAA championship which is set to take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, hosted by Loyalist College in Belleville.
