TORONTO, Ont. – The Durham College men's volleyball team will go into the break riding a five-game win streak after defeating the Seneca Sting 3-2 on Wednesday night.
Ranked 10
th in the CCAA, the Lords were looking to increase the gap between them and the Sting, who were 5-3 going into their final match of the opening half.
Durham started strong with 25-17 and 25-21 set victories, looking dominant early.
Unforced errors were the difference the next two sets, including an attacking error on the final point of the fourth set as Seneca won 25-23 and 26-24 to force the fifth.
Both teams had a chance at taking the match with Durham only leading 8-7 when they swapped sides. After being tied 11-11 the Lords took over and walked away with a 15-12 victory to stay within reach of the undefeated Georgian Grizzlies, who handed Durham their only loss in conference play this semester on November 3.
Bret Polfuss (Kitchener, Ont.) and
Harrison Wood (Uxbridge, Ont.) each had a match-high 18 points for the Lords in the win. Both finished with 15 kills, while Polfuss had two aces and a block and Wood finished with three blocks.
Wood was the most efficient Lord at the net, posting a .520 hitting percentage, which was followed closely by
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) who also finished with 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Mike Harper (Oakville, Ont.) finished the match with a match and season-high five blocks. He also had a season-high nine kills.
Also, finishing with a season-high total was setter
John Pham (Mississauga, Ont.) who had 53 assists.
Seneca's offence, who was run by Taso Ballis, looked mostly to Toms Gaikis who had 13 kills. He also finished with two aces.
The Lords have finished the opening half of the regular season with an 8-1 record and will return to action in the Niagara Knights Invitational on January 6. Their next conference match is Thursday, Jan. 12 against the same Seneca Sting. First serve will be 8 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
