Askew Sets Falcons Softball Record for Most RBIs in a Game

(London, Ontario) – At Fanshawe Alumni Field on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Falcons moved to 2-2 on the season, falling to Durham 7-6 before bouncing back to defeat Seneca 22-6.

In their first game of the day, Marandee Hunter (Chatham, ON) got Fanshawe on the board first scoring teammate Paige Askew (London, ON) to go up 1-0 after the first frame. Great defense from the Falcons, and outstanding pitching from Morgan Lowry (Middlesex-Centre) kept the Lords scoreless over four innings. In the bottom of the fourth, rookie Brittany Greenway (St. Thomas, ON) had a leadoff single, then used her speed to score off of a big hit from Kelsey McLennan (Brandon, MB). An Askew RBI then scored McLennan to extend Fanshawe's lead to 3-0. The Falcons would continue to fly with a huge 2-RBI double from Hunter, followed by an RBI from Jenna Mclean (Watford, ON) to make the score 6-0 going into the fifth inning. However, the Lords did not give up, beginning their comeback by scoring two in the fifth, then went off in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. Unfortunately the Falcons could not recover and fell by a close score of 7-6. Julia Smith (London, ON) took the loss for the Falcons and Durham's Hannah Oke (1-1) was the winning pitcher. Hunter went 2 for 4 at the plate, with 3 RBIs and 1 run.

The Falcons then faced the Seneca Sting (0-3) and went down 4-0 after the opening inning. Fanshawe then came back in the second frame, getting RBIs from Sara Reading (Listowel, ON) and Kamryn Lamond (Tavistock, ON). Askew then hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game 4-4. In the top of the third, Kennedi Roth (Stratford, ON) gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead, hitting a single then eventually reaching home on a Seneca error. The Sting added a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-5. RBI singles from Katie Berg (Stratford, ON) and Hunter put the red and white on top once again, 8-5. A great double play by Mclean and Jana Beiman (Moorefield, ON) kept Seneca scoreless in the bottom of the fourth. Kalyn Hopkins (Bothwell, ON) then made it 9-5 on an RBI from Reading. In the sixth inning, Askew would hit another 2-RBI single to set a new Fanshawe Softball record for most RBIs in a single game. Despite Seneca's best efforts, the Falcons would go on to win 22-6. Smith (1-2) was the winning pitcher for the Birds and Jordan Hughes (0-2) was the losing pitcher for Seneca. Askew was 3 for 5 at the plate, with 6 RBIs and 2 runs. Reading was 4 for 5 at the plate, with 3 RBIs and 5 runs. As a team, new Fanshawe Softball records were set for most RBIs in a game (22) and most hits in a game (22).

Fanshawe will host a doubleheader against the Conestoga Condors (2-2) at Stronach Field on Wednesday evening at 6pm and 8pm.
