Softball Earns Spot in OCAA Championship Game

LONDON – Humber softball will be playing for the OCAA title Saturday, finishing day one of the championship undefeated. The Hawks rode its dominant pitching staff and used timely hitting to earn a spot in its first title game since 2015. Presly Buchanan and Meagan Muir combined to throw 13 innings without allowing an earned run, while Buchanan continued to also swing a hot stick, finishing the day 4-for-7 with a triple and two RBIs.
Game One: Humber 11, Conestoga 1
Meagan Muir opened the scoring for Humber in the home half of the first, driving in Presly Buchanan and Meaghan Murphy to give the Hawks an early two-run lead.
Conestoga cut Humber's lead in half in the third frame, scoring its only run off of a throwing error.
The Hawks responded immediately by putting up a five-spot, started by a two-run triple to the right centre gap from Buchanan.
Humber ended the game in sixth after Kate Kostuch, Breanna Oliver, and Jessica MacPherson hit consecutive RBI singles to give the Hawks the 10-run mercy.
Game Two: Humber 3, Durham 1
Humber's offence started slowly in game two, scattering three hits over the first four innings off of Durham's pitcher, Emily Glendinning.
With seven outs left in the game and trailing by one, the Hawks started to take better at-bats, started by a two-out Hannah Koziolek walk. Alexis Ferreira proceeded to hit a single, followed by an RBI single by Alexa Vassos. After a play at the plate, Durham's catcher threw the ball away trying to catch Ferreira advancing to third, allowing her to score on the error to give Humber the lead.
In the top of the sixth inning and a runner on first, Kate Kostuch made an outstanding catch down the left-field line that would have tied the game if she did not make the play.
Jessica MacPherson added an insurance run in bottom-half, scoring Buchanan on an RBI single.
After a lead-off single to begin the seventh, Meagan Muir struck out Redick for the first out. Clarke then hit a line shot to Vassos at shortstop, who made a brilliant leaping catch and then fired to first for the double play to end the game.
Meagan Muir was dominant in the complete-game victory, scattering six hits while striking out seven hitters.
What's Next?
Humber will await the winner of the St. Clair/Durham bronze medal game tomorrow to see who they will play in the championship final. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
