Lords lock up third consecutive championship appearance

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's soccer team locked their place in the 2019 OCAA provincial championship on Saturday when they edged by the Mohawk Mountaineers in a 1-0 crossover playoff win at Vaso's Field.

The Lords were on the front foot quickly, but were unable to create any clear goal-scoring chances early on.

Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.) had a few shots on goal as the first half went on, but the game remained 0-0 after 30 minutes.

Durham then broke through in the 34th minute when fifth-year captain MacKenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.) converted from the penalty spot.

After going a goal up, the Lords started to drop back to defend the one-goal lead, focusing on shutting down any counter attack the Mountaineers were developing.

Mohawk found it hard to get any chances on goal until late when the Mountaineers went close twice from two free kicks, but the Lords held on to get the 1-0 victory.

Kerrington Steed (Courtice, Ont.) earned the clean sheet in goal for Durham.

The Lords will now play in the quarter-finals at the provincial showcase scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 23. DC will match up against last year's silver medalists, the Humber Hawks in Ancaster with the time TBD. All the championship action will be streamed on OCAA LIVE.

Overall Record: 9-6-0 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 7-2-0

Next match: Wednesday, Oct. 23 vs. Humber Hawks (TBD - OCAA Championship - Ancaster, Ont.)
