OSHAWA, Ont. - In their regular season finale, the Durham College women's basketball team ended the Algonquin Thunder's 15-game winning streak, defeating the visitors from Ottawa by a final score of 67-45 on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
The monumental win over the OCAA east first place team was the first for the Lords since a 75-59 victory over Algonquin on October 21, 2016. With the win, Durham ends their season third in the OCAA east division with a 12-5 record, their best results since finishing 13-5 in 2013-14.
In the win, the Lords defence shined as they forced the Thunder into numerous turnovers and dominated the paint. Durham outpaced Algonquin in steals 15-7 and in blocks 5-2. In addition, DC's high-paced offence caused chaos defensively for the first place Thunder, sending the Lords to the charity stripe 22 times. Not letting easy baskets slip away, Durham shot over 86 per cent from the free throw line as a team, which turned into 19 additional points on top of their primary scoring.
DC will now prepare to host an OCAA crossover qualifying game next Saturday, Feb. 23 against the fifth-place team from the OCAA west division, the Lambton Lions. The winner of the crossover playoff match will advance to the OCAA championship, hosted by the St. Lawrence Vikings in Kingston from Feb. 28 ti Mar. 2.
