Women's Soccer Goes 1-1 in Matches with Sheridan, Mohawk

September 26, 2022...WELLAND - The Niagara Knights women's soccer team split their two games last week taking away a 2-1 win over the Sheridan Bruins at home Wednesday night before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Mohawk Mountaineers on Friday night at Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton.

Wednesday night's game under the lights at Youngs Sportsplex was a scrappy one that resulted in two player ejections and a few more yellow cards. Rylan Greatrix got things started with a goal 30 seconds in on a beautiful through ball from Rachel Looby to go up 1-0 early on. The Knights continued to pressure the Bruins in their end and almost capitalized on a header that just went over the cross-bar from Natasha Desjardins.

The Knights would have another crack at a header goal, this time by rookie Tori Hultink, who popped one past the Sheridan keeper to go up 2-0. The two goal lead would be short lived when the Bruins were awarded a penalty kick and cut the blue and white's lead in half.

The final 15 minutes was where things got ugly. The Bruins Manuella Garcia was ejected with a red card, followed by the Knights McKenna Jackson, also receiving a red card and automatic game ejection.

Both teams played the final minutes down a player with the Knights hanging on to their one goal lead as time ticked away. Niagara would go on to take their third win of the season and head into their match against Mohawk 3-1.

The Knights were hoping to carry the momentum of Wednesday night's win into their tilt with the undefeated Mohawk Mountaineers (1-0-3).

Both teams remained deadlocked through the first and second half with Niagara firing off 11 shots and Mohawk with their own 13. unfortunately for the Knights, the Mountaineers were able to find the back of the net in the 89th minute, which proved to be the game winner to sink the Knights 1-0 and improve to 2-0-3.

"This was a disappointing loss," said head coach Rob Lalama. "It was an adjustment playing on such a large pitch. We created chances but were unable to finish. That's how it goes sometimes."

With the loss, Niagara sits at 3-2 in the OCAA West standings, currently tied with Mohawk in second place with 9 points. Humber remains first with a 4-0-1 record.

The Knights will now look ahead to their Saturday afternoon home game against the Fanshawe Falcons (0-1-3) at 3:00pm.
