OSHAWA, Ont. – An opening set scare wasn't enough for the La Cité Coyotes to top the Durham Lords at home in Oshawa.
After falling 25-20 to the visiting Coyotes, the Lords squeaked out a 25-23 second set and got back on track as they won convincing 25-17 and 25-19 third and fourth sets to take the match 3-1.
Offensively they were led by
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) who continued to add to his lead as Durham College's all-time kill leader with 11 in the match. This pushes his total to 614. He also had four blocks, which was only bested by teammate
Tyler Krabi (Stouffville, Ont.), who finished with five.
This brings Janssen's point total to 748 all-time, which is second in Durham College program history. The current points leader is David McMann, who had 773 points with the Lords from 2009-2012.
On Sunday, the offence was run through
Rory Langley (Uxbridge, Ont.), as per usual, who finished with 36 assists. Defensively he had a career-high 20 digs, which was also a match high. His previous high was 13 on Jan. 29, 2016 against the Algonquin Thunder in Ottawa.
Another notable performance for Durham was
Lucas Pichl (Cobourg, Ont.) with nine kills, two aces and four blocks.
Xavier Demers had a match-high 20 points in the loss for the Coyotes. He finished with 17 kills and three blocks. His teammate Keven Guay wasn't far off with 14 kills, two aces and a block.
After splitting four games in six days, plus completing their suspended game from November 25 at Algonquin, the Lords will now have the week off. Their next match is Saturday, Feb. 3 in North Bay when they take their annual road trip to face the Canadore Panthers.
Their final home game will be Thursday, Feb. 8 against the Fleming Knights – first serve at 8 p.m.
