After a tight and exciting first set which the Huskies took by a slim 26-24, the rest was history as the home team powered to a 3-0 straight sets victory over the visiting Georgian Grizzlies. Coming into the match, the Grizzlies were 4-1 and sat in third place in the OCAA East Division.
Fighting a three-game losing streak, George Brown knew they needed to refocus and stick to their game plan the whole way through to get back into the win column. "Our guys played with a high level of physical intensity that carried us through. We stuck together, competed hard and it showed in the result.", said Head Coach Garrett May after the game. "We've struggled the past few matches and it was great to see all of our work and adjustments coming together for a solid win."
Vivek Mathimakki and Stefane Vezina led the charge for the Huskies, both returning to forms shown at the start of the season. Mathimakki led the team in scoring with 12 points while logging 9 kills on 23 attacks with only one error. Vezina was all over the floor both offensively and defensively, registering seven kills on 14 total attacks alongside seven digs on the defensive side of the ball.
After the close first set, the Huskies blew the game open with a 25-15 second set win behind an incredibly efficient offense. The Huskies recorded a .526 kill percentage, connecting on 11 of 19 total attacks with only two errors while the Grizzlies struggled to put anything consistent together. The visitors logged only seven kills against eight errors in the set. They would also make 17 service errors on the night compared to the Huskies seven.
Those unforced errors proved to be a big difference maker in the game, as George Brown kept complete control through the third as well winning 25-19 and taking the game in straight sets (26-24, 25-15, 25-19). The victory allowed George Brown, now 5-3, to leapfrog Georgian in the standings and take over third place in the East.
Next up, the Huskies get a week's rest and will then host Centennial College (2-6) at the St James Athletic Centre on Wednesday November 27th. Game time scheduled for 8pm.
