Lords open 2019 with upset of Huskies

OSHAWA, Ont. – Everyone knew that Tuesday night's matchup with George Brown would a major test for the Durham Lords women's basketball team and fans didn't leave disappointed.

Tied for the east division lead with Algonquin, the Huskies had reeled off seven straight wins and stood 9-1 on the season going into their matchup with the Lords. When the moment arrived, however, Durham College answered the bell, toppling the visiting squad 70-61.

Any concerns regarding nerves were put to rest early, as the Lords kept pace with their red-hot rivals, ending the first quarter tied 14-14. Durham began building momentum in the second half, even as the Huskies applied an aggressive attack, looking to force turnovers. On the contrary, the Lords routinely found the seams, making pinpoint passes that resulted in odd-number rushes.

In the fourth quarter, Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.), proved just why she is a game-changing talent. She nailed a pivotal three-pointer to cap off Durham's lead, then moments later, recovered her own rebound to find Emily Chamberlain (Kingston, Ont.) for an easy layup.

Next up for the Lords is a Friday night affair in Scarborough against the Centennial Colts. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Marie Stasiuk (Cobourg, Ont.) had a dominant performance, finishing with her sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 boards – nine of which were defensive.
• Three other Lords finished with double-digit scoring as Keisha Arthurworrey (Oshawa, Ont.), Emily Glendinning and Emily Chamberlain had 14, 11 and 10 points respectively.
• Zae Sellers led the Huskies in scoring with 15 points, while Coco Sauve finished with 13 on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc and 5-for-12 from the field.
Keisha Arthurworrey finished the night with the Lords second double-double, grabbing 10 boards (five offensive, five defensive)
• Tianna Sullivan had six offensive rebounds and nine total to lead her team in both categories.
• The Lords outrebounded the Huskies 37-31 in the game, but had nearly double the turnovers.
  Overall Record: 11-7
Conference Record: 6-4
