BELLEVILLE, Ont. - In just their second season competing in the OCAA, the Durham College women's rugby sevens team claimed the provincial silver medal defeating the eventual bronze medalists Seneca Sting in an exciting semifinal showdown, before falling to the Algonquin Thunder in the gold medal game.
Competing for the first time on championship weekend after failing to qualify in their first season a year ago, the Lords picked up a walk-off 19-14 win over the Sting early Saturday morning in Belleville. Trailing 14-12 with just seconds remaining in the semifinal match, the Lords drove the field before second-year athlete
Victoria Browne (Pickering, Ont.) found a hole in Seneca's defence and dashed into the try-zone for the game-clinching score. The victory booked the Lords ticket into the gold medal match.
The Lords then faced fellow east division juggernaut Algonquin Thunder, who knocked off the Lords 24-14 in the championship final as they were able to ride the high from their own semifinal upset of the top seeded Humber Hawks. Kaylah Moehling (Port Colborne, Ont.) and
Danielle Belanger (Courtice, Ont.), along with strong efforts from
Jadika Lynch (Pickering, Ont.),
Carly Warren (Courtice, Ont.) and several others, Durham were unable to top the eventual champions.
Both Moehling and Lynch would be named championship all-stars following their impressive outings in both the semifinal and championship contests.
From one win a season ago to provincial silver in their second season of OCAA competition, the foundation is set for the Lords as a potential annual contender in the OCAA.
