No. 5 Women's Soccer trumps Fleming to kick off postseason

VAUGHAN – No. 5 Humber women's soccer defeated the Fleming Knights by a score of 9-0 and will advance to the OCAA Final Eight. The Hawks put on a goal-scoring show for their fans at the Ontario Soccer Centre as five different players found the back of the net. Humber's dominating performance against Fleming in this afternoon's crossover matchup sent shockwaves around the OCAA, proving the Hawks will be a force to be reckoned with in the 2022 playoffs.

Match Recap

With the sun shining down on the pitch at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont., the Humber Hawks came out the gate soaring. The Hawks took a five-goal lead within the first 17 minutes of the match. Chantel Spalla netted two tallies, while Kaitlynn Russell, Elisa Oliveira, and Hayley Lewis also scored. Russell would add two assists, Oliveira would pick up one helper, and Vanessa Reda and Emily Robitaille would also notch assists within the game's first 17 minutes.

The Hawks would keep rolling in the half potting two more goals off the boots of Oliveira and Lewis for their second tallies of the match. Chantal Spalla picked up her third point of the game. The Hawks dominated the first half, controlling possession for most of the first 45 and taking a convincing 7-0 lead into halftime.

Humber wasn't finished adding to their lead in the second half. In the 51st minute, Casey Ettore smashed a ball in the box that would find the back of the net and put the Hawks ahead by eight. In the 81st minute, Emma Czernuszka buried Humber's ninth and final tally of the match after Emma Genova made a perfect cross from just outside the 18-yard box.

Humber finished their dominating game by posting 27 shot attempts, with 13 coming on target. Isabella Bernardi made one save for her seventh win and eighth clean sheet of the 2022 campaign.

What's next?

No. 5 Humber will head the OCAA Final Eight tournament hosted by Durham College and will take on the Cambrian Golden Shield (6-2-2, 4th East) in the quarter-final round on Oct. 27. Kick-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
