Women’s Basketball Valiant in Loss at Humber

Etobicoke, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team put forth a valiant effort Saturday evening but lost a close one against undefeated and the country's 5th ranked team at Humber College (Etobicoke) by a score of 74-70.  The Saints are now 1-3 in the OCAA's West Division.

The Saints had a good start and led 18-15 after the opening quarter which allowed them to build towards their largest of 11 points (36-25) with under three minutes to play in the half.  Humber closed the gap by the intermission, but St. Clair was still ahead 40-36 due in large part by the strong play of Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) who had 18 first half points.  Humber was able to carry the momentum into the third quarter and overtook the Saints building as much as a 6-point advantage.  St. Clair didn't go quietly and used a Lucier 3-pointer with under a minute to play to close within a bucket (72-70).  Humber however survived the scare to close out the win.

Lucier led all scorers finishing with 40 points which ranks as one of the all-time performances in St. Clair history.  She hit the only four triples in the game for the Saints and made 6-of-8 at the free throw line while adding 7 rebounds.  Lucier's individual scoring total ranks 2nd behind OCAA Hall of Famer Debbie Cowgill who holds the Saints record having scored 52 points in January of the 1979-80 season.  Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) was the only other Saint to reach double figures with 16 points but succumbed to the foul limit mid-way through the fourth quarter.

The Saints were outrebounded 63-42 in the contest as Humber was able to create 22 second chance points and shot 41% from the field to just 35% for St. Clair.

Kia Watt (Toronto, ON) scored 22 points for Humber in the win.

The Saints finish their GTA road trip at Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday which tips at 1pm.
