Lords bounce Sting to improve to 17-0

OSHAWA, Ont. - Facing a Seneca Sting women's volleyball team who have strung together four straight wins in late January, the top-seeded Durham Lords maintained their undefeated streak with a four-set victory over the visitors from North York.

In their last encounter on November 7, the Lords took the fight to the Sting, casting them aside in straight sets; this time around, however, the Sting were ready to battle.

It was déjà vu off the hop, with the Lords handily taking the first set 25-9. The next two sets were uncharacteristically sloppy; poor play at the net, failed returns and botched serves allowed the Sting to tie the match at one set apiece. After a slow start to the third set, the Lords finally regained the lead 18-17 and ultimately escaped with the win. In the fourth, the Lords dug down and put their mental toughness on display – a hard fought 25-19 win for the three sets to one victory.

Following the game, the Durham Lords honoured their two graduating seniors, Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) and Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.).

On Sunday, the women shuttle out to Peterborough for a meeting with the Fleming Knights in their regular season finale. The Lords will be looking to complete their second undefeated season in three years, having most recently achieved an 18-0 record during the 2016-17 regular season. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Jessica Joensen (Pickering, Ont.) led the Lords with 15 points, fueled by 13 kills, one ace and one block, while Althea Boncheff (Alliston, Ont.) notched nine kills, one ace and three blocks for 13 points.
Pasha Ormerod (Terrace, B.C.) and Cassidy Nicholson-Clarke (Ajax, Ont.) rounded out Durham's double-digit point performances scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ormerod registered six kills, three aces and three blocks, while Nicholson-Clarke had six kills, one ace and four blocks
• Nicole Boyd topped the Sting with 10 points from eight kills, one ace and one block.
Georgi Williams (Whitby, Ont.) and Romain were a dynamic duo in distribution, powering Durham's offence with 19 and 13 assists apiece.
• Always a well-rounded player, Boncheff led the Lords defensively with 15 digs, while Terwillegar added 12 of her own.
• Seneca's Taylor Butcher gave the Lords fits with a game-high 16 digs, while Gen Potovszky recorded 20 assists.
  Overall Record: 28-8
Conference Record: 17-0

Next game: Sunday, Feb. 10 @ Fleming Knights • 1 p.m. – Peterborough, Ont.
