2022 Season Preview: Humber Baseball

Humber baseball, fresh off its third straight OCAA championship appearance, will kick off the 2022 season with a trip to Windsor to take on the Lambton Lions and the defending OCAA champions, the St. Clair Saints.

2021 Highlights
  • The Hawks captured the OCAA silver medal, finishing on the podium for the sixth straight season.
  • Humber's 17 home runs last season were the most in the conference – setting a new single-season total for the OCAA and Humber baseball. Humber's previous high was seven.
  • Humber's top of the order – comprised of Stephen Nahrabeki, Aidan Murphy, Dennis Dei Baning, and Cameron Wilcox combined to hit .437 with 12 home runs and 78 RBIs.
At the Helm

Troy Black returns for his second season, leading the Hawks to a silver medal with a 14-5 (.737) record. Alex Thrower (4th season), Justin Marra (3rd season), and Kyle Hill (2nd season) will all return to Coach Black's staff.

2022 Changes

Sheridan and Sault will be joining the OCAA bringing the league total to ten teams. This season

Fresh Faces

11 players will be donning the navy and gold for the first time this season:

  1. Brandon Deans, Pitcher, Mississauga - Made 27 appearances for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (NCAA DI) baseball team from 2020-22, recording 75 strikeouts in 70.1 innings.
  2. Ryan Brodie, Infield, Peterborough - Appeared on the bump nine times during his freshman campaign with the Monroe Tribune (NJCAA DIII), leading the squad with a 14.3 K/9 in 16.1 innings of work.
  3. Ronan Hayes, Pitcher, Toronto – making postsecondary debut
  4. Caleb Eguren, Short Stop, Ottawa – making postsecondary debut
  5. Antonio Barberio, Catcher, Vaughan – making postsecondary debut
  6. Matteo Concepcion, Outfield, Brampton – making postsecondary debut
  7. Justin Groves, Outfield, Peterborough – making postsecondary debut
  8. Noah Garner, Pitcher, Mississauga – making postsecondary debut
  9. Jack St. Louis, Outfield, Mississauga – making postsecondary debut
  10. Esteban Rodriguez, Outfield, Bogata, Colombia – making postsecondary debut
  11. Fraser Trivett, Outfield, Orillia – making postsecondary debut
Record Watch
  • Slugger Aidan Murphy returns for his fourth season, sitting second all-time with five long balls – four behind Dei Baning's record of nine.
  • All-star Dalton Brownlee sits ninth all-time in strikeouts, needing 15 more punchouts to reach the top five.
Postseason

The top-six teams in the regular season will make the postseason, with the top two teams earning a bye into the final four. The championship tournament will be hosted by St. Clair College from Oct. 20 to 22.

Celebration

On September 25, Humber Athletics will induct Steven Hough, Brendan Lyons, Justin Marra, and Keegan Murphy into the Varsity Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place at Connorvale Park before the first pitch.
