OSHAWA, Ont. – With their playoff lives on the line, the Durham College men's soccer team scored three second half goals in a 3-0 shutout over the St. Lawrence Vikings.
Durham (5-3-1) jumps into second place in the OCAA east region, but the Centennial Colts (5-2-0) and Seneca Sting (4-2-1) trail by one and three points respectively with two games in hand. The top three teams in the region will advance to the playoffs with Fleming (2-5-1) receiving an automatic bye as the hosts.
The Lords' offence caught fire an hour into the match as they scored three goals in a 17-minute span. It was not the usual suspects scoring for Durham as all three players got their first goals of the year.
Xavier Wright (Toronto, Ont.) got the ball rolling as he blasted a shot through a number of defenders to get Durham on the board.
Seven minutes later,
Colin Reilly (Whitby, Ont.) sent in a free kick from the sidelines. The ball went in the crease with no player touching it, took a big bounce and ended up going over the Vikings goaltender and in the back of the net.
Lerencz Griffith (Pickering, Ont.) rounded out scoring for Durham in the 77
th minute as he found the ball in the crease, turned and fired it home.
The Lords back line did an amazing job of keeping the Vikings off the board and limiting their scoring chances led by the efforts of graduating seniors
Cody Kraemer (Whitby, Ont.) and
Nicholas Axhorn (Pickering, Ont.).
