Grizzlies edge Lords in battle of top east region teams

OSHAWA, Ont. – In a back-and-forth night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, the Durham College men's volleyball team was unable to knock off the first-place Georgian Grizzlies.

In a five-set battle, Georgian landed the first blow by dropping the Lords 25-18. Durham answered with a 25-16 set of their own.

Again, the Grizzlies were the better team, taking the third 25-19.

The fourth set was all Durham as the Lords led 15-1, en route to a 25-10 win to force the fifth and deciding set.

Georgian led 8-6 when the Lords switched sides. Durham bounced back to lead 12-10, but again the roller coaster of a night continued as the Grizzlies battled back to go ahead 14-12. It ended 15-13 in favour of the team from Barrie.

Bret Polfuss (Kitchener, Ont.) and Andrew Dube (Uxbridge, Ont.) led the Lords with 16 points apiece. Polfuss had 15 kills and an ace, while Dube finished with 12 kills, two blocks and an ace.

Harrison Wood (Uxbridge, Ont.) finished with eight kills and seven blocks. At the service line Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) was the match-leader with five, alongside seven kills.

Georgian's offence was spread out as Adam Bielby and Trevor Recalla were their leaders with nine and eight kills respectively. Darien Haynes led the Grizzlies with five blocks.

Durham will now look to lock up their spot in the OCAA championship with a victory this Saturday in Scarborough against the Centennial Colts. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
