HUSKIES WOMEN’S SOCCER FALL TO KNIGHTS IN PLAYOFFS

Huskies #3 looks on up on field

On October 22, 2022 the George Brown Women's Soccer team traveled to Niagara College to play in an East/West playoff crossover that would see that winner advance to the 2022 OCAA Women's Soccer Championship hosted by Durham College from October 27-30. Unfortunately, the Huskies would come up short in their efforts falling to the Knights by a score of 6-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams came out defending well, with Niagara holding the edge on shots on goal in the first half for a total of seven to the Huskies one, until a late first half penalty kick was awarded to the Knights who would covert to put Niagara up 1-0 heading into half-time.

Without the services of seniors Nicole Carvalho and Julia Kassner in the Huskies lineup, the Knights continuous offensive pressure would prove to be too much for the Huskies in the second half of the match as they added five more goals to take game by a score of 6-0. Niagara midfielder Sydney Sica ended the afternoon with four goals on five shots. The 5th Year senior tallied 12 goals overall during the regular season, tying her for 2nd in the OCAA.

It was a difficult afternoon for the Huskies, but one that head coach Leslie Fitzpatrick knows his team can learn from. "The end of the season wasn't what we had hoped for but as a staff we are truly proud of the girls and their holistic growth this year.", said Fitzpatrick. "Soccer is a game of margins and ultimately, the crossover game should serve as a learning moment for our younger players on the roster. The disappointment experienced should fuel their fire to go out and work hard to make the improvements needed to get us to be more consistent in accomplishing our goals."

The loss marks the end of the George Brown women's outdoor soccer season but as the Huskies look forward to the indoor soccer season, they remain focused on improving, working towards an OCAA medal.

Fitzpatrick continued, "We are really excited about indoor, the roster we have should thrive in this format. We've set a bar high for the indoor season. The hope is that the momentum built from outdoor will propel us to excellence."
