Lords close season with quarter-final loss to No. 4 Falcons

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Durham Lords women's basketball team fell 79-70 to the No. 4 nationally ranked Fanshawe Falcons in quarter-final action on Friday afternoon at the OCAA championship, hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor.

The Lords season comes to an end following the quarter-final loss, however the streak of OCAA championship appearances for the Lords continued to grow as they have qualified for the provincial showcase in four straight years.

DC were in tough with the quarter-final matchup, facing the defending OCAA champion Falcons. Fanshawe has been a perennial powerhouse in women's basketball, earning a provincial medal in five of the past seven seasons.

Undaunted, the Lords got off to a fast start, jumping ahead of the nationally ranked opponents early. Fanshawe was able to find their form though, and once they took the lead they never relinquished it. As per usual, the Durham defence played well, forcing the Falcons into 15 turnovers, while outscoring Fanshawe in both points off turnovers (13-10) and second chance points (14-11). The biggest difference in the game came in the form of the Falcons depth, as they were able to pick up 21 points off the bench to just three for the Lords.

A young DC squad, which only has three graduating seniors, Durham will no doubt grow into an even stronger OCAA east contender come the fall of 2020.
  • Receiving numerous awards the night prior, newly minted CCAA All-Canadian Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) played exceptional for Durham, leading the way with a game-high 37 points. The total surpasses her regular season high from her rookie campaign, 27 points.
• Also reaching double-digits for the Lords, Andrea Zulich scored 18 points, nailing four field goals from behind the three-point arc.
• A balanced attack on offence, the Falcons top scorer was none other than OCAA player of the year Chout Angou who finished the win with 21 points.
  • A beast on the boards, Kendra pulled down 24 rebounds, including 14 off the offensive glass, while adding two assists and two steals to complete her stat line on the day.
• Despite her diminutive stature, Angou also led the Falcons in rebounds, grabbing seven boards. Five other Fanshawe players recorded 4 or more rebounds.
  Overall Record: 20-9 (W-L)
Conference Record: 13-3
