Colts open at home with big win

SCARBOROUGH, Neilson Park – The Centennial Colts baseball team took to the diamond on a windy night for their first home game of the 2022 campaign defeating the Seneca Sting 4-3. Colts ace Brandon Smith went the distance striking out four batters. This marks his second consecutive start pitching a complete game.

"The pitching has been fantastic, with Smith and Liam Oates; both dialled in. Today the bats finally broke out, and everyone was consistent one through nine; catching has been great, and we have been minimizing the errors. It was a full team effort", said coach Ben Anderson.

In the first inning, Colts' third baseman Brandon Turner drove in Josh Savoie with an RBI single to lead off the scoring. Savoie reached base by delivering a booming two-out double to the wall. Former University of Calgary standout Zach Worden notched his first hit as a Colt after hitting an RBI single to add to the lead, 2-0.

The Colts (3-2) capitalized again with two outs in the bottom of the third. Carter Moench hustled an infield single, diving safely into first, and Shoya Hase tapped home plate to make it a 3-0. The Sting (2-3) got on the board in the top of the fourth from a sacrifice fly off AJ Rowe's bat, which Dan Seguin tagged up from the third base to score, Caleb Battye and Robert Pagliero also tallied RBIs to tie the game at 3.

Hase reached on base from what should have been an error in the bottom of the fifth. Robert Mccarty-Salerno hit an RBI double, where Hase scored to regain the Colts' lead, 4-3. The Colts secured the win with their defence, as they took the first game of the doubleheader. Smith's arm stifled the Sting, who average ten runs per game. Liam Oates will be on the mound for the Colts' second game.
