HUSKIES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER IN SEASON OPENER

HUSKIES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER IN SEASON OPENER

The Huskies men's baseball team split the doubleheader with the Centennial Colts on Sunday (Sept. 19) afternoon in the season opener at Christie Pits Park.

Game 1: George Brown 2, Centennial 3

The Huskies offence got off to a slow start, but thanks to their pitching the game remained close.

Fourth-year pitcher David De Cassan got the opening start for the team and threw very well. He went four innings while surrendering two runs on six hits and two walks. First-year pitcher Riley Annand made his Huskies debut and did not look out of place in relief of the veteran. He only gave up one run on three hits through three innings of work.

Those performances allowed the Huskies to only trail 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of walks to start the inning, first-year player Nathan Pruitt came up with a big RBI single to cut the deficit in half. The Huskies went on to tie the game two batters later, thanks to a throwing error.

The Colts responded right away though in the top half of the seventh inning with an RBI double from catcher Garret Kratz.

Unfortunately, the Huskies came up just short in the bottom half of the seventh. With a runner on second with two outs, Aiden Colangelo flew out to right field to end game one.

Game 2: George Brown 12, Centennial 10

In the second contest, the Huskies bats came alive scoring three runs in the first inning, which allowed them to jump out to a 4-2 advantage after four innings.

The Colts offence responded midway through the game. They tallied up five runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to reclaim the lead at 8-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Despite the large deficit, George Brown had not quit in them. Thirteen batters came up in the bottom of the fifth and five different players recorded an RBI in the frame. Most notably, Colangelo and Daniel Farrace drove in the tying and go-ahead run respectively in the frame. The Huskies led 9-8 with possibly two innings left.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Colangelo and Farrace were at it again. Both players recorded their third RBI in the game to help the Huskies increase their lead to 12-8.

Those insurance runs came in handy as the Colts got within two runs in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer.
