OSHAWA, ON - The Durham Lords women's rugby team hosted the Senaca Sting, Loyalist Lancers, Fleming Knights, St. Lawrence Surge, and Humber Hawks at Thompson Rugby Park on Saturday for the final round of regular season matches. DC defeated the Lancers 35-5, Humber Hawks 17-12, and the St. Lawrence Surge 17-12 to finishing a perfect 5-0 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Lords took on the Lancers who jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first five points of the match. The Lords responded quickly though with 35 unanswered points, coming back to win the game 35-5. DC was led by
Danika Johnston (Courtice, ON) who scored three tries and
Shay Morris (Ajax, ON) who scored two of her own. All five of the conversions were good by
Sam Gates (Uxbridge, ON).
In the second game of the day, the 3-0 Lords faced the 3-0 Hawks, putting their perfect records on the line. The Lords were the ones to strike first with a try by
Sam Gates (Uxbridge, ON), who also added a conversion. Keeping the ball rolling, Morris was also able to keep her stellar play going as well, scoring another two tries in this game. Leading 17-0 in the second half, Humber tried to make a comeback but ran out of time with the game ending in a 17-12 victory for the Lords.
The last game of the day for the Lords was versus the Surge, and was tightly contested the whole way through, with the score at halftime being 7-5 for the Lords off another Morris try. The second half got even closer with Gates adding a try, followed by the Surge tying the game with only seconds to play. With time for only one more sequence the Lords delivered, swinging a ball out wide and letting Morris make another amazing run, scoring her sixth try of the day and pushing the Lords into a 3-0 perfect day.
With the clean sweep today the Lords improved to 5-0 on the season and claim the first spot in the OCAA standings heading into the OCAA championship. Durham College is set to host the provincial showcase at Thompson Rugby Park from Oct. 30-31. Full championship details will be released at a later date.
