OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College men's soccer team came out on the wrong end of penalty kicks in quarter-final action versus St. Clair, falling 4-1 in PK's following 120 minutes of deadlocked action at Vaso's Field on Saturday evening.
Following a first round playoff bye for finishing first in the OCAA East, the Lords matched up with the second seed from the OCAA West division Saints who proved to be of equal match for DC. St. Clair were first to jump ahead, scoring a 33rd minute goal from Massimo Pollard. However, St. Clair got themselves into trouble just before the half as a very physical contest saw a Saints player receive a second yellow for dismissal, providing the Lords with an advantage heading into the second half
Coming back from the break, DC looked to put pressure on the visitors, eventually finding the equalizer after a deflection from
Ryan Cullen (Pickering, ON) from a
Robert Murtagh (Whitby, ON) cross found the mesh in the 60th minute.
Knotted up 1-1, Lords keeper
Garrett Werner (Ajax, ON) turned aside several late chances from the Saints, finishing the night with eight total saves to help send the quarter-final into extra time.
After two scoreless fifteen minute periods, the elimination game was forced into penalty kicks, where Murtagh was able to nail the first for DC, but Saints keeper Thomas Kogel made two big saves to help push St. Clair into the OCAA championship final four.
