BELLEVILLE, Ont. – A weekend sweep by the Seneca Sting and a split this week for the Durham Lords means the final women's volleyball match of the regular season for each team will determine who hosts a crossover match on Saturday.
Seneca hosts the Lords on Wednesday, Feb. 14. First serve will be 6 p.m. at the Newnham Campus.
Heading into the weekend the magic number was one – a loss by the Sting on Friday or Saturday – either that or a victory over the Loyalist Lancers by Durham on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Lords fell 3-1 to the first-place Lancers in Belleville.
Madison McBurney (Whitby, Ont.) finished with a career-high nine kills in the loss and just one point off her career-high point total by adding a block and an ace.
The team's offensive leader – continuing her strong second-half play – was
Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.). She finished the match with 16 kills, two aces and a block. Her kill and point totals were both career highs.
With over 30 assists,
Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.), quarterbacked the offence, but also had a team-high five aces.
In order for the Lords to host an OCAA qualifying match on Saturday, Feb. 17, the easiest way would be picking up a win against the Sting on Wednesday. They could also win the tiebreaker with Seneca in a 3-2 loss or potentially points for and against if they lost 3-1. That said, the coaching staff said the focus is simply on winning the match.
Earlier this season the team won 3-1 over Seneca in Oshawa.
