Mountaineers women's soccer received their first regular season point following a 1-1 draw against the Redeemer Royals.

Sam Mathieu, the lone goal scorer for Mohawk, returned to play following an injury that had kept her out of previous play.

"I wasn't sure if I was ready to play today. As I was warming up I felt nervous, but as soon as I started to play I just forgot I was injured," Mathieu said. "Everything felt good, and my confidence went up."

The Royals controlled the early portion of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Leah Sloots was credited with the goal.

Mathieu's and the Mountaineers would later equalize in the 24th minute. Mohawk would carry that energy throughout the first half, generating a total of 12 scoring chances.

In the second half, the Mountaineers continued their strong play as they led in shots 10-3 despite being unable to score.

Mohawk goaltender Samantha DeHaan made six saves in the match.

Paul Giannini, head coach of the woman's soccer team, was excited to see his team starting to get healthy.

"It is huge for us to have the starting 11," Giannini said. "When we have them all there, we can play our style with no one playing out of position."

Mountaineers (0-2-1) will next travel to Niagara to play the Knights (3-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 29 for a 6 p.m. game.
