HUSKIES FALL IN QUARTERFINALS

HUSKIES FALL IN QUARTERFINALS

Matching up with the CCAA No. 11 Fanshawe Falcons in the quarterfinals of the playoffs, the George Brown Huskies women's soccer team battled to the very end but fell short 1-0 in extra time on Saturday (Oct. 23rd) afternoon. The defeat ends the program's historic season.

"When you look back at where we started from in game one to now, I couldn't be prouder of this group," head coach Leslie Fitzpatrick explained. "We just went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country and that's a testament to the women's work ethic, commitment and drive. It's tough to lose especially when you see how close the game was, but the program has something to build on moving forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Huskies had their hands full against the Falcons who came in recording just under seven goals per game having one of the country's best offenses. First-year goalkeeper Sydney Crowe was up for the challenge right from the get-go. She made numerous outstanding saves throughout the match and ended with a career-high 14.

George Brown had a handful of chances, with their best coming late in the second half. Striker Gabriela Dias dribbled through a few Falcons for a partial breakaway, but she could not get the ball over a sprawling Breanne Carriero to open the scoring.

The match remained 0-0 after 90 minutes, which meant extra time was needed. The stalemate ended on a broken play in the box - Fanshawe's Madilyn Michienzie fired a shot towards the net, and on the way there, it hit off a body and went in. Sadly, the Huskies could not generate a goal for the rest of the match.

"This season has proven we are closing the gap on some of these top teams, and we only got better. We need to continue to build off this and take the momentum from this season to the next one," coach Fitzpatrick explained. "The goal is to continue to make George Brown a vital option for students to come here, achieve their goals and make history."

This season goes down as the Huskies best result in program history. It marked the program's first crossover playoff win since they rejoined the OCAA in 2013.
