VAUGHAN – No. 6 Humber women's soccer (5-0-1, 1st West) beat the St. Clair Saints (1-3-1, 7th West) in their first game back at home by a score of 2-0. The corner flag was the Hawks' best friend this afternoon as they scored their goals on corner opportunities. Catarina Medeiros recorded both tallies, while Kaitlynn Russell continued to dominate, adding to her point total on the season with an assist. The Hawks finished the game posting 46 shots, with 17 coming on target and ten corners.

Match Recap

With the Humber Hawks back on their home field at the Ontario Soccer Centre, the Hawks faithful was roaring to see their women's soccer team take on the St. Clair Saints on a beautiful afternoon to mark the first day of October.

In the 28th minute, Humber defender Remi Pelletier was given a yellow card for a slide tackle on a Saints midfielder. The tackle looked clean, with Pelletier getting all ball on her challenge, yet the game's referee thought otherwise.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie leaving the Hawks' offence frustrated. Humber dominated the half, controlling possession for most of the first 45 while seeing some excellent opportunities on goal; however, St. Clair's goalkeeper, Athena DiMario Done, was lights out in the half, making eight saves. The Hawks had 20 shot attempts in the half with four corner opportunities while St. Clair posted zeros across the board offensively.

On the Hawks' 13th shot on goal, they finally broke through, scoring the first tally of the match in the 76th minute. A Kaitlynn Russell corner kick was perfectly placed into the box for Catarina Medeiros, flying in for a header to give Humber a 1-0 lead. This was Medeiros' second goal of the season and fifth point, while Mississauga-native Russell collected her third assist of the season and 15th point.

As stoppage time rolled around, the Hawks' pressure continued. Humber was awarded yet another corner, with Catarina Medeiros stepping up to take it. The Brampton native curled the ball from the corner flag on goal, grazing DiMario Done's fingers and finding the back of the net for her second tally of the game. As the Hawks and their fans celebrated the goal, the referee would blow his whistle to conclude the match giving the Hawks their fifth win of the season.

Hawks first-year goalkeeper, Isabella Bernardi, picks up her fourth win and third clean sheet of the season.
