The Redeemer Royals Women's Soccer team was home Wednesday night for a midweek matchup against the visiting Conestoga Condors. After a narrow defeat at the hands of the St. Clair Saints Saturday, Redeemer was hopeful for a win in their second match of the season.
Redeemer entered the match with an 0-1 record, having dropped their opener on Saturday. The Condors came to Redeemer having defeated the Lambton Lions in their opener 4-1.
Wednesday's match was the first time since 2016 that Redeemer and Conestoga faced off in a league match. That season, Conestoga swept the Royals, winning both matches.
A first half strike by Redeemer's
Avery Johnston wasn't enough as the Royals fell 2-1 to the Condors. Megan Voutour opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute before Johnston tied the match heading into the half.
Despite outshooting the Condors in the 2nd half, Redeemer wasn't able to capitalize again. Megan Voutour added her second of the game in the 56th minute to put the Condors ahead for good.
A free kick by
Serena DeJong almost tied the match up again for the Royals in the 60th minute but the shot was tipped by Condors goalie Jessica Burgess and deflected off the crossbar.
With the loss, the Royals drop to 0-2 on the season.
The Royals will hit the road for their first away game of the season Saturday when they travel to London to face the Fanshawe Falcons. Redeemer will be in tough against the reigning CCAA Bronze Medalists, with 0 wins in their last 10 matches against the Falcons.
