St. Clair Men’s Baseball Taste First Defeat with Durham Split

Tecumseh, ON – The St. Clair College Men's Baseball team (8-1) lost their first game of the season to Durham College (Oshawa) Saturday afternoon in a 16-12 shootout at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh.  The Saints rebounded for a 15-5 mercy shortened victory to split the doubleheader. 

In the opening game loss St. Clair made an uncharacteristic four fielding errors and gave up 21 hits to Durham who only failed to score in the 3rd inning but filled up the rest of the frames with runs.  The Saints trailed by as much as eight runs before cutting it to 15-12 entering the 7th inning.  The visitors topped it up heading to the last and held off the momentum to hand St. Clair its first loss of the season.  Saints starter Evan Ferguson (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's) was tagged with the loss in three innings of work after giving up five runs on six hits. 

Brendan Renaud (Amherstburg, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) had three hits including a double while driving in four runs to lead the Saints in a losing cause while Josh Anderson (Ajax, ON) and Henry Real (Panama City, Panama) each had two hits with Real collecting three RBI's. 

The Saints responded nicely in the game two win overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the 3rd inning when they scored five times in their half before forcing the mercy in the 5th with eight runs.  Renaud had another fine game at the plate with two hits and four RBI's while rookies Hunter Appleyard (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) and Riley Briggs each collected a pair of hits also.  Appleyard also scored a run, reached on a walk, and added an RBI while Briggs walked twice, scored three times, and drove in three.  Aden Ryan (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) picked up his third win of the season after throwing five innings even though he gave up five runs on six hits and walked three but had four strikeouts. 

The Saints get back on the diamond Monday hosting a 9-inning exhibition game against the University of Windsor starting at 7:00pm.  They resume their OCAA schedule on Friday travelling to Etobicoke to face Humber College in a doubleheader and squeezed in the remainder of their suspended game against Seneca College (North York) on Saturday.
