Fanshawe Women’s Volleyball Team Falls to No. 4 Humber

(London, Ontario) – On Sunday afternoon at home, the Fanshawe Women's Volleyball squad (4-5) fell to the No. 4 nationally ranked Humber Hawks (8-1) 3-1 to complete the regular season.

The Falcons kept pace with the Hawks to open the first set with strong serving from third-year outside hitter Kiana Lee (London, ON). A kill from Lauren Vahrmeyer (Vineland, ON), followed by a huge block from Hannah Onyema (St. Thomas, ON) got the home team fired up. Unfortunately, Humber's powerful offense began to pull away after a three-point run to make the score 17-14 for the visitors. The red and white were unable to recover and dropped set one 25-15.

An Ashley Rafferty (Peace River, AB) service ace got Fanshawe on the board in the second set. The home team had a slim advantage early on, with points from Dez Chanthaboury (Kitchener, ON) and Onyema. Fanshawe extended their lead to 15-10 midway through the set with another ace from Rafferty. The Falcons continued their strong play for the remainder of the set and won 25-19.

In a battle of the birds, the teams traded points in the third set. Fanshawe got points from Jaime Worsfold (Dorchester, ON) and Vanessa Vargas (Mississauga, ON) and tied the set at 15. Despite a 4-0 run from the Hawks, the Falcons did not give up and chipped away. A massive block from Chanthaboury got the home crowd on their feet, tying the set at 21. Unfortunately, Humber was able to pull off a 25-23 third set win.

In the fourth frame, consecutive left-side kills from Lee and Chanthaboury got the Falcons going. Fanshawe took a 10-8 lead with a hit from Vahrmeyer. The home team gave an excellent effort defensively, with incredible digs from Vargas and Rafferty to maintain Fanshawe's lead 15-11. However, the Hawks came back to tie the set at 18 and gained momentum late in the set. The Falcons fell 25-22 in set four and dropped the match 3-1. Vahrmeyer led the Falcons with 11 points, while Lee and Chanthaboury added 10 each.

Fanshawe will take the road for a first round playoff game against a to-be-determined opponent on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. The match can be live streamed at: www.fanshawefalcons.ca/watchlive.
