Mountaineers lose two games at Seneca

Mountaineers lose two games at Seneca

The Mohawk Mountaineers were outscored 27-8 between both games of a Wednesday night doubleheader against the Seneca Sting.

Both games found the Mountaineers down early and unable to stage a comeback. Seneca had multiple high scoring innings on the day, while Mohawk's pitching and defence had trouble consistently finding outs.

The game one loss saw Mohawk down 6-1 after two innings. But a four-run top of the third closed the gap and seemed to energize the Mountaineers, only for Seneca to add six runs in the bottom of the inning and push the score out of reach. The final score ended at 15-5.

Hope General (Six Nations) and Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON) each had two hits and Olivia Thompson (Peterborough, ON) added two RBIs to highlight Mohawk's game one offense.

Game two also found the Mountaineers in a large deficit after the second inning and a trio of runs scored in the first three innings would not be enough offense for Mohawk on their way to a 12-3 loss.

Walker added another pair of hits in game two.

Although the Mountaineers have only found a one win in ten games to start the season, the team has shown promise at different times to be competitive. Mohawk still has plenty of opportunities this season to turn their fortunes around and to capitalize on the talent that the coaches feel is present on the team.

The Mountaineers will get an opportunity to turn things around at Mohawk Sports Park on Sept. 24 when they host the St. Clair Saints for doubleheader action beginning at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The doubleheader will mark the halfway point in the season for Mohawk.
