No. 4 Women's Volleyball sweeps weekend doubleheader

ETOBICOKE- No. 4 Humber women's volleyball (4-0, 2nd West) swept its weekend matchups to safeguard their perfect record and prove to the conference why they are ranked fourth in Canadian collegiate volleyball. Saturday evening saw the Hawks defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield (1-4, 8th West), while Sunday afternoon's clash with the Boréal Vipères (0-5, 10th West) was another victory for Humber. 

Humber vs. Cambrian

On Nov. 5, the Hawks swept the Cambrian Golden Shield in straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) to record its third straight victory to start the season. The fourth-ranked team in the nation meshed for an all-around team effort in the win as they posted 35 kills, 32 assists, 30 digs, and six aces. On the defensive end, the Hawks were tenacious as the squad recorded eight blocks over the match's three sets. 

The first set saw Humber face the fiercest offensive pressure from the Golden Shield's squad, who were looking for their first win of the season. Cambrian took an early lead; however, the Hawks talented defence stopped the Golden Shield from maintaining any momentum, and Humber cruised to a 25-17 set win. 

The following two sets mirrored each other as the Hawks won by a margin of ten points in back-to-back sets to close the match. The Hawks hurdled ahead to take a demanding lead in both sets. Humber took advantage of Cambrian as they could not get anything going, and the Hawks swept the match in three-straight sets. 

Hannah Manners was red-hot for the Hawks as she recorded a team-high ten kills and co-led Humber in blocks with two alongside Keyome Ellis and Alex Krstonosic. Sydney Ferguson's 17 assists topped the squad, while Erika Dodd posted eight digs to lead Humber, maintaining the team's perfect record. 

Humber vs. Boreal

The next morning, Humber once again dominated the Boréal Vipères in straight sets (25-4, 25-16, 25-8), who saw its losing streak extend to 236 consecutive matches. to tally their fourth victory of the 2022-23 campaign. The Hawks controlled play for the entirety of the match as they posted 37 kills, 35 assists, 32 digs, and eight aces. 

The Hawks set the tone for the match from the very first serve. Stephanie Armstrong served 18 consecutive times to start the match as Humber dominated Boréal in the first set. Boréal got four points back after the Hawks' 18-0 run, but Humber scored seven straight points to close out the set, 25-4. 

The second set began neck and neck as the teams were knotted at five through ten rallies. The Hawks then picked up their game and went on an 11-3 run to put them up by a commanding eight points. Boréal made a late push but could not overcome the fierce Hawks, and Humber was awarded their second set victory of the match. 

Humber offered Boréal virtually no hope in making a miraculous comeback as the Hawks hurdled ahead to an early double-digit lead in the third set. The Hawks explosive offence closed the match on an 8-2 run as the squad notched their fourth victory of the season. 

Pickering-native Stephanie Armstrong led the Hawks in assists with 23 and aces with three, while Sarah Bindi's seven digs topped the squad. Ara Telan and Hannah Manners co-led Humber in kills with six.

No. 4 Humber will conclude its three-match homestand on Nov. 16 against the Conestoga Condors (2-0, 4th West). First serve is slated for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
