Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer battled back for a 2-1 win over the St. Lawrence Surge in the OCAA crossover playoff round.

With the victory the Mountaineers advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2017 season.

St. Lawrence jumped out in front in the 15th minute from a freekick that surprised the Mohawk defence. The Mountaineers would go into halftime trailing 1-0.

Mohawk controlled most of the first 45 minutes with a total of eight shots.

Mountaineers head coach, Paul Giannini, said the team needed some time at the beginning of the game to reach its best level.

"We don't usually face teams that sit everybody deep in their ends," Giannini said. "It took us time to figure it out, but the girls kept the ball moving and we found success in the end."

The ability to control momentum began to payoff for Mohawk after Kimberly Brinker (Welland, ON) tied the match with a header in the 50th minute. Janelle Lammers (Frankford, ON) would score the game-winning goal in the 58th minute.

"We sometimes need to score earlier facing big teams and today was not the case," Lammers said. "(However), we scored at the right time today and got the result."

The Mountaineers will compete in the OCAA Championship tournament set to take place at Durham College in Oshawa, ON between Oct. 27-30.

Mohawk will face the host Durham Lords in the quarterfinal round on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m.
