Durham triumphs over St. Lawrence

OSHAWA, Ont. - The No. 15 nationally ranked Durham Lords men's soccer team continued their winning start to the season with a 5-1 victory over the St. Lawrence Vikings at Vaso's Field on Friday night.

DC opened the night controlling play and dominating possession in the Vikings territory. LeRohne Young (Oshawa, Ont.) nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute but his shot was saved by the Vikings goalkeeper. Joshua Lee (Ajax, Ont.) then thought he had the first goal of the game in the 19th minute when he got onto the end of a Colin Reilly (Whitby, Ont.) pass, but was ruled offside.

The Lords efforts would not be denied forever though as Young broke through for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. The powerful midfielder got onto the end of a cross at the back post to tap home into the empty net to record his fifth goal of the season.

Going into the break, the Lords led 1-0 with seven shots to St. Lawrence's zero.

Reilly then had a chance himself early on in the second half when his free kick was tipped onto the crossbar.

Shortly after Durham earned a penalty in the 61st minute when keeper Kevon Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) played a nice long pass from a drop kick which fell to Lee in the box who was fouled by the Vikings goalkeeper.

It was the captain, Reilly, converting from the spot into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0, marking his fourth goal of the season.

The flood gates opened for DC following the penalty kick as Ryan Airlie (Whitby, Ont.) then notched his first goal of the season in the 75th minute when he got onto the end of a cross and headed home. Just a minute later the Lords made it 4-0 when Jeremy Bangala (Pickering, Ont.) was left unmarked at the back post and connected well with the ball to find the top right corner.

St. Lawrence picked up a late consolation goal in the 84th minute through Kurtis Kelly, but the Lords added a fifth goal for good measure in the dying moments of the game when Isiah Passley (Pickering, Ont.) was open at the back post and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.

Durham remain top of the eastern conference with five wins from five games and will host second place Algonquin Thunder tomorrow afternoon with kickoff set for 3:15 p.m.

Overall Record: 7-1-1(W-L-D)
