Condors Spoil Home Opener with 3-1 Win over Knights

September 12, 2022...WELLAND - The Niagara Knights women's soccer team had their season debut and home opener spoiled by a 3-1 loss to the Conestoga Condors Friday night at Youngs Sportsplex.

The first half remained tight for both teams when Niagara caught a break at the 32 minute mark when they were awarded a penalty kick. Sydney Sica put the Knights up 1-0 on the PK, and held on to that lead for the remainder of the half.

The blue and white clung to the 1-0 lead through the second half before things started to unravel late in the match. Conestoga was awarded a controversial penalty kick that Megan Heyes snuck just under a Knights keeper Sierra Naccarato to tie things up at 1-1 in the 82 minute.

The tying goal seemed to light a fire under Conestoga as time trickled down on the clock. Nicole Soares netted one just out of reach of Naccarato to take the 2-1 lead, before Haley MacArthurs sealed up the W for the Condors in the final minute to make it 3-1.

Head coach Rob Lalama was visibly disappointed after his team's season opening loss.

"Disappointing to lose in the home opener," said Lalama. " A no-call on arguably a penalty kick for us, and then a questionable penalty shot awarded to Conestoga to tie the game. The visitors (Condors) were organized and more willing to battle for the 50/50 balls. Tough loss, but we will regroup and prepare for Tuesday's game against Sheridan."

Niagara will hit the road for their first away game of the regular season against Sheridan College (1-0) Tuesday night in Oakville.
