Lords defeat host Golden Shield to advance to OCAA semifinal

SUDBURY, Ont. – Two wins – that's what stands between the Durham College women's volleyball team and an OCAA championship.

After a 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14) win over the host Cambrian Golden Shield on Friday night, the Lords will likely feel some déjà vu. In 2016-17 they were 18-0 through conference play, qualified for the championship and won their OCAA quarter-final match, setting up a semifinal battle with the Niagara Knights.

They defeated the Knights in that meeting and eventually brought home silver after their match against the Humber Hawks. They're hoping they can change the end result this time around.

"We're happy with the match result to open the weekend, but know we need to be better on Saturday," said head coach Tony Clarke. "This time of year there isn't much room for mistakes and we saw Cambrian capitalize on our errors a few times time. Their home crowd was fantastic and it was a great atmosphere to open the championship. We hope Friday is a positive start to a successful weekend."

On Saturday night, the Lords will face the Knights at 8 p.m., while the Humber Hawks and Fanshawe Falcons go head-to-head in the other semifinal.
Althea Boncheff (Alliston, Ont.) was named Durham's player of the match, finishing with 19 points (15 kills, three aces, one block).
Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.) finished the match with nine kills (.429 hitting percentage), while earning a block and service ace.
• Durham's block leader was Pasha Ormerod (Terrace, B.C.) with three.
• Marissa Besson led Cambrian with 12 kills and two aces to be named the Golden Shield player of the game.
Georgi Williams (Whitby, Ont.) and Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) split the setting duties, with 22 and 10 assists respectively.
• Terwillegar had a match-high 14 digs, with Jessica Joensen (Pickering, Ont.) and Boncheff having 12 and 10 respectively.
  Overall Record: 31-8
Conference Record: 18-0

Next game: OCAA championship (semifinal) – Saturday, Feb. 22 vs. Niagara Knights • 8 p.m. – Sudbury, Ont.
